Having tuned in Denver, I found the knock threshold to be the same as sea level. My thoughts are that the engine/turbo has to work harder to achieve the same boost reading on the gauge, since the air is thinner, the turbo has to spin harder to make the same boost level. The turbo spinning harder is creating more heat and more heat introduces knock sooner. The reality is, only the same boost level is safe at higher altitude. We also noticed when tuning in Denver, the mixture was leaner when we used the same program as Sea Level. I have not wrapped my head around why that is yet, but it was the case on every car tuned we tuned in Denver.
